Bioinformatics National Certification (BINC) was instituted by Department of Biotechnology, Government of India in 2005 at Savitribai Phule Pune University, formerly University of Pune, Pune to certify bioinformatics professionals and recognizing candidate's theoretical and practical ability and fostering interdisciplinary research. Later on, it was transferred to Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi and then to Pondicherry University, Puducherry. Pondicherry University conducted the BINC examination in 2015, 2016 and 2017.

Biotech Consortium India Limited (BCIL), New Delhi is conducting the BINC 2018 examination on behalf Department of Biotechnology, Government of India.

BINC is a certification programme for graduate and post-graduate students for recognizing their exceptional bioinformatics knowledge and skills and to improve their employment opportunities. There is a growing need for trained manpower in the area of Bioinformatics. Currently, various universities and institutions, both government and private, impart Bioinformatics education in India. The qualifying candidates will be awarded a lifetime certificate. This certification would facilitate industries and potential employers in recruitment of Bioinformatics professionals having exceptionally good bioinformatics skills.

The certification under Bioinformatics National Certification (BINC) scheme is given to the candidates after three tier selection process. The successful candidates are also eligible for availing Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) for pursuing Ph.D. in Bioinformatics at recognized Indian universities/institutes. The research fellowships of all BINC qualified Indian nationals are funded by DBT. BINC qualified candidates are called DBT certified Bioinformaticians while the individuals availing the fellowships are called as DBT-BINC Junior Research Fellows (DBT-BINC-JRF). Cash prize of 10,000/- each is awarded to the top 10 BINC qualifiers.

Eligibility

i) Bachelor's/Master's degree in Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, Chemical Sciences, Mathematical Sciences, Agriculture, Veterinary, Medicine, Pharmacy, Engineering and Technology.

ii) No formal training, diploma or certificate in bioinformatics is required.

iii) Candidates in final year of Bachelor's/ Master's degree are also eligible to apply.

Pattern of Examination

Syllabus

The syllabus consists of six sections - Bioinformatics, Biology, Physical Science, Chemical Science, Mathematics & Statistics, and Information Technology.

Note: Paper-III will be computer based practical and will include programming on Bioinformatics

Bioinformatics National Certification (BINC) Examination 2016

Examination consists of two parts:

Part - I (Paper - I) : June 12, 2016 (10 AM -12 PM)
Part - II (Paper • II & III) : June 26, 2016 (9 AM • 12 PM & 2 PM • 4 PM)

Objective: Pondicherry University, on behalf of the Department of Biotechnology (DBT),
Government of India, will conduct the Bioinformatics National Certification (BING) examination. The objective of this examination is to identify Bioinformatics professionals
for further studies as well as to help potential employers in recruitment of candidates having exceptionally good Bioinformatics skills.

Eligibility : Bachelor degree in Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, Chemical Sciences, Mathematical Sciences, Agriculture, Veterinary, Medicine, Pharmacy, Engineering and Technology are eligible to appear for the examination. They need not have any formal training, diploma or certificate in Bioinformatics.

Application and syllabus : The online application can be filled from April 13, 2016 to May 13, 2016.

It consists of five sections:
Bioinformatics, Biology, Physical and Chemical Sciences, Mathematics & Statistics and Computer Science & Information Technology.

Examination : The examination fee is Rs. 600/- for general candidates, Rs. 400/- for women/OBC candidates and Rs. 200 for SC/ST candidates, and no fee for physically challenged candidates.

The online Part - I (Paper - I) examination is scheduled on June 12,2016 and Part- II (Paper - II and Paper- III) on June 26, 2016. The Paper- I will be of objective type and candidates scoring a minimum of 40% marks in Paper - I will be called to appear in Part II examination.

Part II examination consists of two papers : The Paper - II will be of short answer type questions of three hours duration while the Paper- III will be a practical examination of two hours duration to test analytical ability and programming skill of candidates.

Research Fellowships for all the successful candidates those who are interested and qualified in pursuing Ph.D. in India will be awarded. In addition, cash prizes will be awarded to the top 10 successful candidates.

Pondicherry University,Puducherry,on behalf of Department of Biotechnology, Government of India, will conduct the BINC examination in2015. The objective of this examination is to certify bioinformatics professionals, trained formally as well as self-trained.Registration will open from March 9,2015 to April 30,2015. Pondicherry University, Puducherry has been identified as a nodal agency by the Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India to coordinate this examination along with nine centres namely, Pune University, Pune; Anna University, Chennai; Calcutta University, Kolkata; Institute of Bioinformatics & Applied Biotechnology, Bangalore; North-Eastern Hill University, Shillong, University of Hyderabad, Hyderabad; University of Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram; Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi and Assam Agricultural University, Guwahati. In the BINC 2013 examination,17 candidates were certified. DBT has agreed to fund Research fellowships for all the BINC qualified Indian nationals to pursue Ph.D. in Indian Institutes/Universities. Note that the candidate must possess a postgraduate degree(or equivalent) & meet the criteria of the institutes/universities in order to avail research fellowship. In the BINC 2013 examination,17 candidates were certified. DBT has agreed to fund Research fellowships for all the BINC qualified Indian nationals to pursue Ph.D. in Indian Institutes/Universities. Note that the candidate must possess a postgraduate degree(or equivalent) & meet the criteria of the institutes/universities in order to avail research fellowship.
