Postdoctoral Research Assistant at RVC

This is a fixed term post for 24 months.

We wish to recruit a highly motivated, postdoctoral scientist to carry out a BBSRC funded project in the laboratory of Dr. Denis Larkin. The project is focused on developing and applying new methods and algorithms to study genome and chromosome evolution in mammals and other animals using whole-genome sequences and existing algorithms (e.g., Damas et al. Genome Res. 2017. 27(5):875-884; Kim et al., Proc Natl Acad Sci USA. 2013. 110 (5)). The post holder will use cutting edge computational and laboratory approaches to generate chromosomal assemblies for sequenced genomes, study chromosomal structures and differences between mammalian and other vertebrate genomes in attempt to identify species- and clade-specific genome signatures.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. and a track record of success, as indicated by first-author publications in international journals. They must possess excellent organisation skills and be capable of individual initiative and of interacting as part of a team. Applicants with extensive practical experience in bioinformatics or computer science, programming, visualization, handling of large data sets, high-performance computing are encouraged to apply. The post will involve collaboration with a wide range of academic partners both within the EU and worldwide.

Experience in programming, bioinformatics and comparative genome analysis is essential. Applicants should have a minimum of a degree and preferably a higher degree in a relevant subject.

The Royal Veterinary College has the largest range of veterinary, para-veterinary and animal science undergraduate and postgraduate courses of any veterinary school in the world and is one of the largest veterinary schools in Europe.

Prospective applicants are encouraged to contact Dr. Denis Larkin, Comparative Biomedical Sciences Department on +442071211906 or email: dlarkin@rvc.ac.uk

We offer a generous reward package.

Imagine comparing humans and chimpanzees to discover which genes make us different. You have millions of RNA-sequencing reads—but there is a catch: the computer may align these reads more easily to one species' genome than the other.

Suddenly, a technical error can look like a biological difference.

This is the problem Kenneth A. Barr and Yoav Gilad tackle with CrossFilt, a new computational tool introduced in Genome Biology journal.

CrossFilt acts like a careful referee. It keeps only sequencing reads that can be reliably compared across species, filtering out reads that could create alignment bias.

When tested on human, chimpanzee, and rhesus macaque data, CrossFilt reduced false discoveries and produced more reliable cross-species comparisons.

The message is simple: before asking what makes species different, we need to make sure our methods aren't creating those differences.

In genomics, sometimes the most important discovery is finding—and removing—the bias hiding in the data.

Read more at https://link.springer.com/article/10.1186/s13059-026-04082-2?

MGRA (Multiple Genome Rearrangements and Ancestors) is a tool for reconstruction of ancestor genomes and evolutionary history of extant genomes.

It takes as an input a set of genomes represented as sequences of genes (or synteny blocks) and produces such sequences for ancestral genomes at the internal nodes of the phylogenetic tree.

The phylogenetic tree may be also specified completely or partially, in the latter case MGRA can reconstruct conserved ancestral regions (CARs) of the ancestral genome of interest.

Since version 2 MGRA supports gene insertion and deletions in addition to genome rearrangements and allows the input genomes to have different gene content.

It also can reconstruct most plausible phylogenetic tree based on the rearrangement characters.

Address of the bookmark: http://mgra.cblab.org/

Genomicus is a genome browser that enables users to navigate in genomes in several dimensions: linearly along chromosome axes, transversaly across different species, and chronologicaly along evolutionary time.

Once a query gene has been entered, it is displayed in its genomic context in parallel to the genomic context of all its orthologous and paralogous copies in all the other sequenced metazoan genomes. Moreover, Genomicus stores and displays the predicted ancestral genome structure in all the ancestral species within the phylogenetic range of interest.
