<p>Researcher in Computer Science at the Computational Biology Unit - temporary employment</p>

<p>The Department of Informatics is a vacant position as a researcher in computer science, related to Computational Biology Unit (CBU), for 3 years.<br /> <br />The position is part of CBU Service Group and will focus on bioinformatic analysis project and especially the analysis of high-throughput data, including NGS (sequencing), and proteomics data.<br /> <br />The successful candidate will be part of the Norwegian bioinformatics platform's national helpdesk within the project ELIXIR.NO<br /> <br />Applicants must hold a PhD in a relevant subject such as computer science, mathematics, molecular biology and also possess expertise and experience in bioinformatics statistics and analysis of data from high-throughput molecular experiment.<br /> <br />Basic programming or scripting skills are required. Experience in Python, R, Perl, Linux-based operating systems and moreover knowledge of databases and web programming will be a strength for applicants.<br /> <br />We expect enthusiasm and independence and moreover the ability to work in an interdisciplinary team environment.<br /> <br />Good knowledge of English is required.<br /> <br />Salaries start at level 57 (code 1109/LR 24.1) by appointment. Further promotion occurs after<br />service seniority in the position (at grade 57-65).   <title><![CDATA[Postdoc Positions - Mammalian Transcriptome Evolution at SIB]]></title>

<p>BIOINFORMATICS POSTDOC IN FUNCTIONAL EVOLUTIONARY GENOMICS</p>

<p>Center for Integrative Genomics, University of Lausanne, Switzerland</p>

<p>Two postdoctoral positions (2 years with possible extensions up to 5 years) are available immediately in the evolutionary genomics group of Henrik Kaessmann.</p>

<p>We are seeking highly qualified and enthusiastic applicants with strong skills in computational biology/bioinformatics, preferably also with experience in data mining and comparative or evolutionary genome analysis.</p>

<p>We have been interested in a range of topics related to the functional evolution of genomes from primates (e.g., the emergence of new genes and their functions) and other mammals (e.g., the origin and evolution of mammalian sex chromosomes). In the framework of a recently launched series of projects, a large amount of transcriptome and genome (e.g., epigenome) data are being produced by the wet lab unit of the group using next generation sequencing technologies for a unique collection of tissues from representative mammals and outgroup species (e.g., birds). Topics of current projects based on these data include the origins and/or evolution of protein-coding genes, alternative splicing, microRNAs, long noncoding RNAs, and dosage compensation.</p>

<p>The postdoctoral fellow will perform integrated evolutionary/bioinformatics analyses based on data produced in the lab and available genomic data. The specific project will be developed together with the candidate.</p>

<p>The language of the institute is English, and its members form an international group that is rapidly expanding. The institute is located in Lausanne, a beautiful city at Lake Geneva.</p>

	<description><![CDATA[<p>NCBI Genome Workbench is an integrated application for viewing and analyzing sequence data. With Genome Workbench, you can view data in publically available sequence databases at NCBI, and mix this data with your own private data.</p><p><img src="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/core/assets/gbench/images/firstscreen_still.gif" alt="Introductory screen shot" style="border: 0px; border: 0px;"></p><p>Genome Workbench can display sequence data in many ways, including graphical sequence views, various alignment views, phylogenetic tree views, and tabular views of data. It can also align your private data to data in public databases, display your data in the context of public data, and retrieve BLAST results.</p><p>Genome Workbench is built on the NCBI C++ ToolKit and uses cross-platform APIs for graphics. It runs on your local machine, and is available for Windows 2000/XP, Linux, MacOS X, and various flavors of Unix.</p><p>NCBI Genome Workbench is an integrated application for viewing and analyzing sequence data. Genome Workbench was developed entirely in-house at NCBI and makes use of the NCBI C++ ToolKit. The C++ ToolKit provides a convenient and flexible cross-platform API for managing system internals, database connections, network sockets, and the NCBI data model. 	<description><![CDATA[<p>You as a bioinformatican run lots of program on your servers. Sometime the shared server is also used by your colleague. If server is busy you sometime need to check the running programs and want to monitor the running programs as well. The "top" command will come in handy when you need to find out if things are still running, how long they&rsquo;ve been running, or how much memory is being used.<br /><br />&lsquo;top&rsquo; is very simple to run: type<br /><br />%% top<br /><br />You&rsquo;ll get a screen that looks like this, and is updated regularly:<br /><br /><img src="http://bioinformaticsonline.com/mod/photo/top.png" width="659" height="582" alt="image" style="border: 0px;"><br />Simple, right? Heh.<br /><br />First! Note that you can use &lsquo;q&rsquo; or &lsquo;CTRL-C&rsquo; to exit from &lsquo;top&rsquo;.<br /><br />Now let&rsquo;s read and understand at each line independently.<br /><br />The first line:<br /><br />top - 23:00:48 up 39 days,&nbsp; 2 user,&nbsp; load average: 0.00, 0.00, 0.00<br /><br />The first line tells you the current time, how long the machine has been up, how many users are logged in, and the short/medium/long-term compute load on the machine. If you run something for a long time, you&rsquo;ll see these numbers go up. Right now, the machine is basically just sitting there, so these are all close to 0.<br /><br />The second line:</p><p>Tasks:&nbsp; 239 total,&nbsp;&nbsp; 1 running,&nbsp; 238 sleeping,&nbsp;&nbsp; 0 stopped,&nbsp;&nbsp; 0 zombie<br /><br />This line tells you how many processes are running. If you are using laptops machines it&rsquo;s not so interesting because you really are the only one using this machine.<br /><br />Cpu(s):&nbsp; 0.0%us,&nbsp; 0.0%sy,&nbsp; 0.0%ni,100.0%id,&nbsp; 0.0%wa,&nbsp; 0.0%hi,&nbsp; 0.0%si,&nbsp; 0.0%st<br /><br />This line contains the CPU load. The first two numbers are how busy the system is doing computation (&ldquo;us&rdquo; stands for &ldquo;user&rdquo;) and how busy the system is doing system-y things like accessing disks or network (&ldquo;sy&rdquo; stands for &ldquo;system&rdquo;).
