WALK IN INTERVIEW

A walk-in Interview for the following position tenable at the Bioinformatics Infrastructure Facility (BIF), Department of Biotechnology, Alagappa University will be held at the Department of Biotechnology, Science Campus, Alagappa University, Karaikudi 630 004 on 03.08.2013 (Saturday) at 12:30 PM. This national facility is funded by the Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India, New Delhi. The main objectives of the Centre involve teaching and research activities in bioinformatics/biotechnology.

1. Studentship (One Post):

Stipend : Rs. 5000 p.m. (consolidated)

Qualification: M.Sc., in Bioinformatics/Biotechnology/Biophysics/Biochemistry/
Life Sciences

Institut Pasteur de Tunis (IPT):
The IPT is a research institution founded in 1883. IPT is under the supervision of the Ministry of Health and is part of the Université El Manar of Tunis (Ministry of high Education). The missions of the institute are: Public Health Laboratory activities (PHL), Research on infectious diseases, and R/D on vaccines. Research programs are mainly oriented towards local health problems such as leishmaniais, viral hepatitis, and scorpion venoms. The group of Bioinformatics and Modelling of the IPT is hosted by the Laboratoire d’Immunopathologie Vaccinologie et Génétique Moléculaire (LIVGM), and exists since the beginning of 2005. Its present research activities include: genome annotation, EST clustering and modelling of the host/parasite response to Leishmania infection. It consists of two senior scientists, two PhD students and one MSc student

Centre de Biotechnology de Sfax (CBS):
Bioinformatics activity started at CBS in 2001 with the settingup of a research and service unit of bioinformatics. This unit currently includes one senior researcher, one engineer and four Phd students. Activities include sequence annotation (service) and three research programs: ab initio prediction of short eukaryote genes, statistical modelling by Bayesian networks approach of signal transduction pathways and statistical analysis of human sequence variation data (haplotype reconstruction and linkage disequilibrium). Although the computing facilities are good, there is still a need for trained human resources to strengthen bioinformatics capacities at CBS, particularly in structural bioinformatics.

Applications are invited for a Junior Research Fellow (JRF) in Innovative Young Biotechnologist Award (IYBA) research project funded by Department of Biotechnology (DBT).

The project involves identification and characterization of transcription factors (TFs) from the Arabidopsis shoot apical meristem stem cell niche using genomic approaches and construction of a gene regulatory network for the identified TFs.

Positions: 1

Duration: 1 year but extendable up to three years based on performance and availability of funds.

Emoluments: As per DST rules.

Essential Qualifications: M.Sc. in any branch of life sciences with excellent academic record with CSIR-UGC NET or DBT-JRF. Candidate having previous work experience in the area of bioinformatics, molecular biology and genetics is preferred, but not required.

Rotifers Lab

For scientists in the MBL’s Gribble Lab, the rotifer (Brachionus manjavacas) is used as a model organism to study evolution, stress responses, the biology of aging, and maternal effects. Rotifers are small, easy to grow in the lab, have a short lifespan, and share many of their genes with humans. That makes them ideal specimens in which to address questions relevant to human health as well as understand basic biological and evolutionary processes. Brachionus rotifers produces eggs that can be completely dried and frozen for decades, then hatch within a day when exposed to water and light.
