NVIDIA and Arc Institute Unveil Evo 2: A Breakthrough AI for DNA Design

NVIDIA and the Arc Institute have introduced Evo 2, a groundbreaking AI model designed to understand, predict, and generate DNA sequences. This marks a major advancement in computational biology, offering scientists an unprecedented tool to decode the genetic blueprint of life and even design entirely new biological systems.

The Power of Evo 2: AI Meets DNA

Evo 2 is the largest AI model for biology ever created, trained on an astonishing 9.3 trillion DNA "letters" (nucleotides) carefully selected from genomes spanning the entire tree of life. This massive dataset ensures that Evo 2 can recognize patterns and relationships in genetic sequences at an unparalleled scale.

For the first time, scientists can design DNA with AI, moving beyond simple sequence analysis to active DNA generation. Evo 2 enables researchers to predict, modify, and even create entire genetic sequences, opening new possibilities in medicine, agriculture, and synthetic biology.

Decoding the Dark Genome

One of the biggest challenges in genetics is understanding the non-coding regions of DNA—vast stretches of the genome that do not code for proteins but play crucial roles in regulating gene expression. These regions control when and how genes are activated, influencing everything from development to disease.

Evo 2 is designed to decode these non-coding elements, helping researchers uncover their functions and use this knowledge to develop gene-based therapies, synthetic life forms, and precision agriculture solutions.

From Reading DNA to Writing It

To put Evo 2’s impact into perspective:

Previous AI models could "read" DNA like a book, analyzing genetic sequences and identifying patterns.

Evo 2 can "write" entirely new DNA, designing functional genes, chromosomes, and even full genomes from scratch.

This means scientists can now engineer biological systems with AI, designing new proteins, metabolic pathways, and genetic circuits to address real-world challenges.

A Step Toward Generative Biology

The Arc Institute describes Evo 2 as a major step toward "generative biology"—a revolutionary approach where AI is used to create novel biological structures rather than just analyzing existing ones. This could lead to breakthroughs such as:

New medicines: AI-generated enzymes and proteins tailored for targeted therapies.

Disease-resistant crops: Genetically optimized plants for higher yield and climate resilience.

Synthetic organisms: Custom-designed microbes for bioremediation, biofuel production, and industrial applications.

An Open-Source Revolution

Unlike many proprietary AI models, Evo 2 is open source, making its capabilities accessible to researchers worldwide. This democratization of AI-driven biology means that scientists from different disciplines can collaborate, experiment, and innovate, accelerating discoveries in genetic engineering and synthetic biology.

With Evo 2, the boundaries of what’s possible in DNA design, genetic engineering, and biological innovation are being redrawn. The future of life sciences is no longer just about understanding life’s code—it’s about writing it.

Genomics and sequencing approach for identification of biomarkers to assess the efficacy of TGF-βRI inhibitors (of liver cancer) in vivo

Liver cancer is third leading cause of deaths and fourth most frequent occuring cancer worldwide. There are multiple signaling pathways responsible for causing cancer amongst which TGFb is most important cytokine whose signaling pathway promote cancer. However, main problem is to cure this cancer at late stage where we still have no treatment strategy to tackle this deadly cancer. Hence we need to find out new therapeutic target. One way is to look the relationships between mRNA, methylation and miRNA data of patients with different pathological conditions (cancer vs control either with inhibitor/not). MiRNA is small RNA molecules known to inhibit mRNA expression of particular gene by binding improperly to 3'UTR region of a gene and hence block binding of TF /translation of gene. CpG regions is known to located at promoter region of gene (5' UTR) and usually hypomethylated which allow to gene to transcribe and translate however sometime this region become hyper-methylated thats prevent expression of host gene. Thus , integration of these three data reveal new targets and pathways important for causing or preventing cancer and also reveal biomarker thats check the effects of inhibitor on signaling pathway underlying liver cancer.

Roche has acquired Bina Technologies !!!

Bina Technologies is a privately held company that provides a big data platform for centralized management and processing of next generation sequencing (NGS) data for the academic and translational research markets. Bina will be integrated into the Roche Sequencing Unit, and will continue to focus on development of their innovative genomic analysis solution.

Roche has acquired Bina Technologies, a privately-owned biotech company based in California. The biotech’s first product was the Bina Box, a platform for secondary genomic analysis, sequence alignment, and variant calling, but since 2012, it has developed other products and platforms.

It is our shared vision with Roche that informatics and data sciences are critical elements of an end-to-end genomics solution. Fast, easy-to-use, scalable, and robust informatics solutions make a big difference in the quality and impact of the work of scientists and researchers. We believe in the future of data-driven, personalized medicine. We are passionate about accelerating that future together with Roche.

Financial details of the deal were not disclosed. For Roche, the move is yet another in a string of acquisitions. Last week (December 18), Roche paid $489 million for antibody maker Dutalys. And earlier this month, Roche bought prenatal testing company Ariosa Diagnostics.

Reference

http://blog.bina.com/news/bina-technologies-acquired-by-roche?&__hssc=109677338.1.1419953400266&__hstc=109677338.b8350f2729889b08f1325906d5236cd3.1419953400266.1419953400266.1419953400266.1&hsCtaTracking=96cac941-9372-4bbf-bacb-3ca6f1ff8cfd|3fce0f18-835b-4086-9345-388880861732

http://www.the-scientist.com/?articles.view/articleNo/41750/title/Roche-Buys-Bioinformatics-Firm/
