The main subject of interest in our laboratory is the study of the relationship among sequence, structure, and function in proteins and nucleic acids. Our research can be divided in two major topics:

the study of the sequence-structure relationship
(application -> structure prediction)
the study of the structure-function relationship
(application -> function prediction)

Therefore, anything related to the configuration (sequence) and conformation (structure) in atomic systems of proteins and nucleic acids, and the interaction of these with other elements (function) is of our major interest.

In the Svardal lab they are interested how the astonishing natural diversity we see on earth came into being, by which forces it formed and how it is changing today. Hence, they are trying to understand the process of evolution, with mathematical models and through the analysis of genome sequencing data.

Genomes, and in particular differences between them, are a crucial source of information to understand evolution and biology in general. They provide a record of the evolutionary past of populations, their relatedness patterns, their demography, and their adaptations.

Now, it is important to remember that to get all k-mers from a sequence you need to get the first k characters, then move just a single character for the start of the next k-mer and so on.
