The MetaGraph framework is designed to work with a wide range of input data sets, indexing from a few samples up to the contents of entire archives with hundreds of thousands of records. The indexing workflow always follows the same principle, transforming single input samples into error-removed, refined sample graphs, which are then merged into a joint metagraph index. Each input sample is annotated in the joint index as a subgraph. This graph index enriched with metadata can then be used for downstream applications such as sequence search or differential assembly.

Professor of Bioinformatics

The Department of Statistics are seeking to recruit a Professor of Bioinformatics. The professorship will be held alongside a Fellowship at University College.

The Department is at the forefront of developments in machine learning, data science, and computational methods for understanding complex biological systems, integrating these approaches into both its research and teaching. This role offers significant scope to shape the future of bioinformatics and quantitative biology at Oxford and beyond.

You will be expected to develop and lead a world-class research programme in bioinformatics, helping to strengthen Oxford's position in areas such as statistical genomics, computational biology, machine learning for biological data, engineering biology, systems biology, and biomedical data science. We value the breadth of approaches that contribute to modern bioinformatics. You will be a researcher with an international reputation in bioinformatics, with a strong record of producing influential research at the interface of statistics, computational biology, genomics, and data science, and of securing research funding. Your work should advance the field, whether through methodological innovation, biological discovery, or the development of new approaches to understanding complex biological and biomedical data. You will bring experience of shaping research strategy, building productive collaborations, and exercising academic leadership. Above all, we wish to appoint someone who shares our values of intellectual curiosity, academic excellence, scholarly integrity, and a commitment to fostering a positive, supportive, and inclusive environment for all.

If you would like to discuss this post, please contact the Head of the Department of Statistics, Professor Frank Windmeijer, frank.windmeijer@stats.ox.ac.uk, or for information about University College please contact the Senior Tutor, Dr Andrew Bell, andrew.bell@univ.ox.ac.uk. All enquiries will be treated in strict confidence and will not form part of the selection decision.

The closing date for applications is 12:00 noon UK time on Monday 21 September 2026. Interviews are expected to be held in November 2026.

The natural world is a diverse place. To contend with highly variable environments, organisms have evolved a wide range of traits and behaviours as adaptations to their environment. From armour plating in stickleback to trade-offs between growth rate and cold tolerance in lodgepole pine, organisms have found many different genetic solutions to the challenge of existing in their environment. In my lab, we study a range of questions asking how such complex adaptations evolve:
How is the genetic basis of local adaptation shaped by the interplay between natural selection and dispersal?
Does the architecture of genome evolve to facilitate further adaptation?
How can we use genomic technologies and bioinformatics to study adaptation?
How do organisms adapt to rapidly changing environments?

To attempt to answer these questions about the basics of how evolution works, we use a combination of computational biology, analytical theory, comparative genomics.

Structural polymorphism analysis from NGS data

The LabEx BASC (Biodiversity, Agroecosystems, Society, Climate), a network of 13 laboratories of the Paris-Saclay Scientific Cluster, is seeking a bioinformatician to analyze Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) data analysis. In the context of a flagship project aiming at understanding and improving the adaptive capacity of agroecosystems it will be critical to establish a link between sequence variation, functional variation, gene/protein expression and phenotypic adaptation.

The successful candidate will be in charge of the detection of polymorphisms including structural variants, of the comparison of multiple and diverse genomes of a same species and of the construction of pan- and core-genomes. These challenging tasks will require bioinformatics developments and implementation of methods for accommodating the high level of repetitiveness of complex genomes. The tools will be integrated into pipelines and made available to end-users through the Galaxy platform. The bioinformatician will therefore also have to provide researchers with advices on their experimental designs in order to ensure compliance of produced datasets with pipelines requirements. He/she will be hosted by a bioinformatics/informatics team (7 people) (http://moulon.inra.fr/index.php/fr/equipestransversales/atelier-de-bioinformatique) which has computational facilities and expertise in NGS data analysis, and will benefit as well from national and international collaborative networks (Aplibio http://www.renabi.fr/platforms/aplibio/, Transplant http://transplantdb.eu, AMAIZING http://www.amaizing.fr/).

The position requires a doctoral degree (PhD) in bioinformatics with strong expertise in script writing (Python/Perl) and pipeline development.

Applicants should send a CV and the names of 2 referees willing to provide a letter of recommendation to joets@moulon.inra.fr.

Our research aims to better understand how living systems respond to chemical agents. A key aspect of our approach involves using computational frameworks that are powered by formal (i.e. machine understandable) semantics to make effectively use of vast and diverse amounts of biomedical knowledge. We are particularly interested in understanding how the response to chemical exposure is modulated by genetic and physiological variation among individuals and how this translates into altered capabilities at the molecular level.
