Sorghum, a staple food for 500 million resource-poor people in marginal environments and a model for other important crops, sorghum holds vital genetic resources as humanity confronts the nexus of food crisis and climate change. The recent research provides an unmatched resource to respond to these challenges by identifying a large high-quality SNP and indel data set in diverse sorghum genotypes.

In addition to providing a broad sample of the diversity in S. bicolor, the genotypes included in this study are known to display agronomically important traits including stay-green drought resistance, insect resistance, grain size and grain quality.

Find more at http://www.nature.com/ncomms/2013/130827/ncomms3320/full/ncomms3320.html

Adrian Bird CBE FMedSci FRS is the Buchanan Chair of Genetics at the University of Edinburgh.

The human genome sequence has been available for more than a decade, but its significance is still not fully understood. While most human genes have been identified, there is much to learn about the DNA signals that control them. This lecture described an unusually short DNA sequence, just two base pairs long, CG, which occurs in several chemically different forms. Defects in signalling by CG are implicated in disease. For example, the autism spectrum disorder Rett syndrome is caused by loss of a protein that reads methylated CG and affects the activity of genes.

The Royal Society GlaxoSmithKline Prize Lecture is awarded for original contributions to medical and veterinary sciences published within ten years from the date of the award.

Complete, accurate replication of the genome is essential for life. All chromosomes in eukaryotic cells must be duplicated and then segregated to daughter cells to ensure genetic integrity and produce the large number of cells that make up a multicellular organism. We are using genetic, genomic and computational methods to understand how chromosome replication is regulated to ensure genome stability. By focusing on the basic biology that underpins cell growth and division we aim to provide new insights that may help our understanding of diseases such as cancer and congenital disorders.

There are two options to run ShRec3D (on linuX only so far): the first one uses the Matlab complier runtime environment (MCR), the second one doesn't need any other library to be installed but only works with the latest versions of Linux (equivalent to Fedora 19 and above).

Address of the bookmark: https://sites.google.com/site/julienmozziconacci/#TOC-Downloads

Sequencing By Xpansion

Sequencing By Xpansion (SBX) is a DNA sequencing method that uses a simple biochemical reaction to encode the sequence of a DNA molecule into a highly measurable surrogate called an Xpandomer. This single molecule approach produces enough Xpandomer in a single drop reaction to sequence an entire human genome 1000X over. To achieve this, an Xpandomer replaces each DNA sequence with a sequence of large, high signal reporter molecules using the SBX molecular expansion technology. The DNA sequence is then read out as the Xpandomer reporters pass sequentially through a nanopore detector. SBX is a molecular engineering platform that benefits from core design principles that separate the multiple molecular functions. This systems approach enables efficient development and incorporation of improvements to SBX and is key to reconfiguring and optimizing Xpandomer measurement for different detection platforms.

http://www.stratosgenomics.com/stratos-genomics-technology

Strudel is our graphical tool for visualizing genetic and physical maps of genomes for comparative purposes. The application aims to let the user examine their data at a variety of different levels of resolution, from entire maps to individual markers, and explore syntenic relationships between genomes. All browsing and interaction with Strudel happens in real-time – there is no need to wait while the maps are generated. It is built using Java 1.6 and ships with its own JRE, so there is no need for users to install or update Java.

Address of the bookmark: https://ics.hutton.ac.uk/strudel/
