Instead of Desktop folder, icons of all of my home folder are showed on desktop.

Then I thaught it migh be a problem of graphical display and I opened the terminal out of curiosity, and I found out that there is no ~/Desktop folder at all. What happened? What do I need to do?

Then I google the problem and found this is a very common problem after updates. To fix this problem, follow these steps:

You need to edit the ~/.config/user-dirs.dirs file, and make sure the contents of the file are like the following:

XDG_DESKTOP_DIR="$HOME/Desktop"
XDG_DOWNLOAD_DIR="$HOME/Downloads"
XDG_TEMPLATES_DIR="$HOME/"
XDG_PUBLICSHARE_DIR="$HOME/Share"

It provides a simple and powerful user interface that helps to manage and build your content through a web browser. Elgg offers a rich set of features including messaging, microblogging, file-sharing, RSS support, access control, groups, and many more.

 

In this tutorial, we will show you how to install and configure Elgg social networking platform on Ubuntu 20.04.

Prerequisites

• A fresh Ubuntu 20.04 VPS on the Atlantic.net Cloud Platform
• A valid domain name pointed to your server IP
• A root password configured on your server

Step 1 – Create Atlantic.Net Cloud Server

First, log in to your Atlantic.Net Cloud Server. Create a new server, choosing Ubuntu 20.04 as the operating system with at least 2GB RAM. Connect to your Cloud Server via SSH and log in using the credentials highlighted at the top of the page.

Once you are logged in to your Ubuntu 20.04 server, run the following command to update your base system with the latest available packages.

apt-get update -y

Step 2 – Install Apache, MariaDB and PHP

Elgg runs on Apache web server, is written in PHP, and uses MySQL/MariaDB as a database backend, so you will need to install the Apache, MariaDB, PHP and other required PHP extensions to your server. You can install all of them with the following command:

apt-get install apache2 mariadb-server php libapache2-mod-php php-common php-sqlite3 php-curl 
php-intl php-mbstring php-xmlrpc php-mysql php-gd php-xml php-cli php-zip unzip wget -y

After installing all the packages, edit the php.ini file and change some recommended settings.

nano /etc/php/7.4/apache2/php.ini

Change the following values:

max_execution_time = 300
memory_limit = 512M
upload_max_filesize = 100M
date.timezone = Asia/Kolkata

Save and close the file, then restart the Apache service to apply the configuration changes.

systemctl restart apache2

Step 3 – Create a Database for Elgg

Next, you will need to create a database and user for Elgg. First, log in to MySQL shell with the following command:

mysql

Once logged in, create a database and user with the following command:

CREATE DATABASE elgg;
CREATE USER 'elgg'@'localhost' IDENTIFIED BY 'secure-password';

Next, grant all the privileges to the elgg database with the following command:

GRANT ALL ON elgg.* TO 'elgg'@'localhost' IDENTIFIED BY 'secure-password' WITH GRANT 
OPTION;

Next, flush the privileges and exit from the MariaDB shell with the following command:

FLUSH PRIVILEGES;
EXIT;

At this point, the MariaDB database is created for Elgg.

Step 4 – Install Elgg

First, download the latest version of Elgg from its official website using the following command:

wget https://elgg.org/download/elgg-3.3.13.zip

Once the download is completed, unzip the downloaded file with the following command:

unzip elgg-3.3.13.zip

Next, move the extracted directory to the Apache root directory:

mv elgg-3.3.13 /var/www/html/elgg

Next, create a data directory and set proper ownership and permissions to the Elgg directory:

mkdir /var/www/html/data
chown -R www-data:www-data /var/www/html/elgg
chown -R www-data:www-data /var/www/html/data
chmod -R 755 /var/www/html/elgg

Once you are finished, you can proceed to the next step.

Step 5 – Configure Apache for Elgg

Next, you will need to configure Apache to serve Elgg. You can configure it by creating a new Apache virtual host configuration file:

nano /etc/apache2/sites-available/elgg.conf

Add the following lines:

DocumentRoot /var/www/html/elgg/
ServerName elgg.example.com
Options FollowSymLinks
AllowOverride All

Save and close the file, then enable the virtual host and Apache rewrite module with the following command:

Finally, restart the Apache service to apply the changes:

Step 6 – Access Elgg Web Interface

Now, open your web browser and access the Elgg web interface using the URL http://elgg.example.com. You should see the Elgg welcome screen:

First: Size of a directory (du) and and second: free disk space that exists on your machine (df).


'du' – Check the size of a directory


$ du
This command ( du) gives you a list of directories that exist in the current working directory along with their sizes in kilobytes (default). The last line of the output gives you the total size of the current directory including its subdirectories.

$ du /home/jin1
The above command would give you the directory size of the directory /home/david

$ du -h
The same “du”command with some flag gives you a better output than the default one. The option '-h' stands for human readable format. Therefore, in order to print the sizes of the files / directories in your desire notation use this time suffixed with a 'k' if its kilobytes and 'M' if its Megabytes and 'G' if its Gigabytes.

$ du -ah
If you are interested in checking everything present in a folder use above mentioned command. It gives us not only the directories but also all the files that are present in the current directory. The “-a” flag displays the filenames along with the directory names in the output.

$ du -c
This gives you a grand total as the last line of the output. So if your directory occupies 30MB the last 2 lines of the output would be 30M.

$ du -s
Use this command to displays a summary of the directory size. It is the simplest way to know the total size of the current directory.

$ du -S
This would display the size of the current directory excluding the size of the subdirectories that exist within that directory. So it basically shows you the total size of all the files that exist in the current directory.

$ du --exculde=mp3
Several times it required to exclude some directory in our size calculation. In such cases the above command would display the size of the current directory along with all its subdirectories, but it would exclude all the files having the given pattern present in their filenames.


'df' - finding the disk free space / disk usage

$ df
Hmmm … now “df” command is really useful, and I guess you are going to use it over time. Typing the above command, outputs a table consisting of 6 columns. All the columns are very easy to understand. Remember that the 'Size', 'Used' and 'Avail' columns use kilobytes as the unit. The 'Use%' column shows the usage as a percentage which is also very useful.

$ df -h
Displays the same output as the previous command but the '-h' indicates human readable format. Hence instead of kilobytes as the unit the output would have 'M' for Megabytes and 'G' for Gigabytes.

Example: Linux installed on /dev/hda1
$ df -h | grep /dev/hda1


All right, this is not the only option to check the sizes and free spaces but there are a few more options that can be used with 'du' and 'df' . I will discuss it later.

  1. Ensure the package lists are up-to-date: sudo apt-get update
  2. Install prerequisite packages: sudo apt-get install build-essential git qtbase5-dev libqt5svg5-dev
  3. Download the Bandage code from GitHub: git clone https://github.com/rrwick/Bandage.git
  4. Open a terminal in the Bandage directory.
  5. Set the environment variable to specify that you will be using Qt 5, not Qt 4: export QT_SELECT=5
  6. Run qmake to generate a Makefile: qmake
  7. Build the program: make
  8. Bandage should now be an executable file.
  9. Optionally, copy the program into /usr/local/bin: sudo make install. The Bandage build directory can then be deleted.

1. Check your SSH Client Version:

Checking for your SSH client is very sare, but sometimes it may be necessary to identify the SSH client that you are currently running and it’s corresponding version number. The SSh client can be identified as follows

$ ssh -V
OpenSSH_3.9p1, OpenSSL 0.9.7a Feb 19 2013

$ ssh -V
ssh: SSH Secure Shell 3.2.9.1 (non-commercial version) on i686-pc-linux-gnu

2. Connect and login to remote host:

The First time when you login to the remotehost from a localhost, it will display the host key not found message and you can give “yes” to continue. The host key of the remote host will be added under .ssh2/hostkeys directory of your home directory, as shown below.

localhost$ ssh -l jit remotehost.example.com

jit@remotehost.example.com password:

remotehost.example.com$

The Second time when you login to the remote host from the localhost, it will prompt only for the password as the remote host key is already added to the known hosts list of the ssh client.

localhost$ ssh -l jit remotehost.example.com
jit@remotehost.example.com password:
remotehost.example.com$

For some reason, if the host key of the remote host is changed after you logged in for the first time, you may get a warning message as shown below. This could be because of various reasons such as 1) Sysadmin upgraded/reinstalled the SSH server on the remote host 2) someone is doing malicious activity etc., The best possible action to take before saying “yes” to the message below, is to call your sysadmin and identify why you got the host key changed message and verify whether it is the correct host key or not.

localhost$ ssh -l jit remotehost.example.com

jit @remotehost.example.com's password:
remotehost$

4. Debug SSH Client:

Sometimes it is necessary to view debug messages to troubleshoot any SSH connection issues. For this purpose, pass -v (lowercase v) option to the ssh as shown below.

Example without debug message:

        localhost$ ssh -l jit remotehost.example.com
        warning: Connecting to remotehost.example.com failed: No address associated to the name
        localhost$

Example with debug message:

        locaclhost$ ssh -v -l jit remotehost.example.com
        debug: SshConfig/sshconfig.c:2838/ssh2_parse_config_ext: Metaconfig parsing stopped at line 3.
        debug: SshConfig/sshconfig.c:637/ssh_config_set_param_verbose: Setting variable 'VerboseMode' to 'FALSE'.
        debug: SshConfig/sshconfig.c:3130/ssh_config_read_file_ext: Read 17 params from config file.
        debug: Ssh2/ssh2.c:1707/main: User config file not found, using defaults. (Looked for '/home/jit/.ssh2/ssh2_config')
        debug: Connecting to remotehost.example.com, port 22... (SOCKS not used)
        warning: Connecting to remotehost.example.com failed: No address associated to

5. Escape Character: (Toggle SSH session, SSH session statistics etc.)

Escape character ~ get’s SSH clients attention and the character following the ~ determines the escape command.
Toggle SSH Session: When you’ve logged on to the remotehost using ssh from the localhost, you may want to come back to the localhost to perform some activity and go back to remote host again. In this case, you don’t need to disconnect the ssh session to the remote host. Instead follow the steps below.

i. Login to remotehost from localhost: localhost$ssh -l jit remotehost
ii. Now you are connected to the remotehost: remotehost$
iii. To come back to the localhost temporarily, type the escape character ~ and Control-Z. When you type ~ you will not see that immediately on the screen until you press and press enter. So, on the remotehost in a new line enter the following key strokes for the below to work: ~

    remotehost$ ~^Z
    [1]+  Stopped                 ssh -l jit remotehost
    localhost$

iv. Now you are back to the localhost and the ssh remotehost client session runs as a typical unix background job, which you can check as shown below:

    localhost$ jobs
    [1]+  Stopped                 ssh -l jit remotehost

v. You can go back to the remote host ssh without entering the password again by bringing the background ssh remotehost session job to foreground on the localhost

    localhost$ fg %1
    ssh -l jit remotehost
    remotehost$
