DBT-Junior Research Fellowship (DBT-JRF) in Biotechnology (2020)

BIOTECHNOLOGY ELIGIBILITY TEST (BET) 2020

Applications are invited from bonafide Indian citizens, residing in India for award of “DBT-Junior Research Fellowship” (DBT-JRF) for pursuing research in frontier areas of Biotechnology and Life Sciences. The candidates will be selected through “Biotechnology Eligibility Test (BET)”. Based on the performance in BET, two categories of merit list will be prepared (Category-I and Category-II). Government of India norms for reservation will be followed for selection. Candidates selected under category-I will be eligible to avail fellowship under the programme. These will be tenable at any University/Institute in India where the selected candidate registers for PhD Programme. Candidates selected under Category-II will be eligible to be appointed in any DBT sponsored project and avail fellowship from the project equivalent to NET/GATE, subject to selection through institutional selection process. There will be no binding on Principal Investigators of DBT sponsored projects to select JRF for their project from category-II list. Selection in category-II will not entitle student for any fellowship from DBT-JRF programme.

ELIGIBILITY

Qualification: M.Sc./ M.Tech./ M.V.Sc. or equivalent degree/ Integrated BS-MS/ B.E./ B.Tech. in any discipline of Biotechnology, M.Sc./ M.Tech. Bioinformatics/ Computational Biology, students admitted under DBT supported Postgraduate Teaching Programs. M.Sc. Life Science/ Bioscience/ Zoology/ Botany/ Microbiology/ Biochemistry/ Biophysics and Masters in Allied areas of Biology/Life Sciences. Candidates appearing in the final year examination are also eligible to apply.

Marks: Minimum 60% marks for General, EWS & OBC category and 55% for SC/ ST/ Differently abled in aggregate (or equivalent grade).

Age Limit: Upto 28 years as on the last date of application for General & EWS category. Age relaxation of up to 5 years (33 years) for SC/ ST/ Differently Abled/ women candidates and upto 3 years (31 years) for OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) candidates.

Pondicherry University Puducherry has been identified as a nodal agency by the Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India to coordinate this examination along with nine centres namely, Pune University, Pune; Anna University, Chennai; Calcatta University (WBUT) Kolkata; Institute of Bioinformatics & Applied Biotechnology, Bangalore; North-Eastern Hill University, Shillong, University of Hyderabad, Hyderabad; University of Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram; Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi and Assam Agricultural University, Guwahati.

In the BINC 2013 examination,17 candidates were certified. DBT has agreed to fund Research fellowships for all the BINC qualified Indian nationals to pursue Ph.D. in Indian Institutes/Universities. Note that the candidate must possess a postgraduate degree(or equivalent) & meet the criteria of the institutes/universities in order to avail research fellowship. In addition, cash prize of Rs. 10,000/- will be awarded to the top 10 BINC qualifiers.

Examination consists of two parts:

Objective: Pondicherry University, on behalf of the Department of Biotechnology (DBT),
Government of India, will conduct the Bioinformatics National Certification (BING) examination. The objective of this examination is to identify Bioinformatics professionals
for further studies as well as to help potential employers in recruitment of candidates having exceptionally good Bioinformatics skills.

Eligibility : Bachelor degree in Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, Chemical Sciences, Mathematical Sciences, Agriculture, Veterinary, Medicine, Pharmacy, Engineering and Technology are eligible to appear for the examination. They need not have any formal training, diploma or certificate in Bioinformatics.

Application and syllabus : The online application can be filled from April 13, 2016 to May 13, 2016.

Syllabus for the examination is available online.

It consists of five sections:
Bioinformatics, Biology, Physical and Chemical Sciences, Mathematics & Statistics and Computer Science & Information Technology.

Examination : The examination fee is Rs. 600/- for general candidates, Rs. 400/- for women/OBC candidates and Rs. 200 for SC/ST candidates, and no fee for physically challenged candidates.

The online Part - I (Paper - I) examination is scheduled on June 12,2016 and Part- II (Paper - II and Paper- III) on June 26, 2016. The Paper- I will be of objective type and candidates scoring a minimum of 40% marks in Paper - I will be called to appear in Part II examination.

Part II examination consists of two papers : The Paper - II will be of short answer type questions of three hours duration while the Paper- III will be a practical examination of two hours duration to test analytical ability and programming skill of candidates.

Research Fellowships for all the successful candidates those who are interested and qualified in pursuing Ph.D. in India will be awarded. In addition, cash prizes will be awarded to the top 10 successful candidates.

DBT Invites online applications from the bioinformatics students and requisitions from biotech/bioinformatics companies.

Biotech Industry :

Biotech/Bioinformatics companies interested to provide hands on industrial training to the students of Bioinformatics under BIITP may apply online. The companies would have no obligation towards any payments to trainees. The companies would be paid bench fee to cover expenses towards training. Trainees would be provided to companies subject to availability.

Bioinformatics students interested in training in biotech / bioinformatics companies may apply online. Stipend of Rs. 10,000/- per month will be paid to candidates placed for training. The candidates will be selected for training through an interview.

Eligiblity :

a) B.E /B.Tech./M.Sc./M.Tech./Advanced Post Graduate Diploma in Bioinformatics from an Indian recognized university with minimum 55% marks or equivalent grade at highest degree/diploma completed in the year 2015 or 2016 are only eligible to apply.

b) The Advanced Post Graduate diploma should be of at least one year duration after graduation.

c)  Students whose result of last semester/final year is not declared can also apply mentioning their marks upto the semester/year upto which result declared. The final result with original mark sheet(s) of all the semesters/years will have to be produced at the time of interview.
