Bioinformatics in Africa: Part3 - Mali

International Center for Excellence in Research (ICER):

The ICER is a research center composed of the following three programs: 1. The Malaria Research and Training Center Parasitology Group, 2. The Malaria Research and Training Center Entomology Group 3. The SEREFO Group.

The first two programs develop biomedical researches in malaria, Filariasis and Leishmaniasis. The third program develops biomedical researches in tuberculosis and HIV.

Bioinformatics was introduced recently to the ICER and is constantly growing. The ICER has one team, headed by Sidy SOUMARE, which supports the three programmes in all their needs in informatics and bioinformatics. This team can beneficiate from some computational facilities (4 blast servers, 15 other servers and around 200 terminals), but the ICER staff needs some training in order to be able to administrate these facilities.

Research Interest and Activities: The following are the present areas of research interest: 1. Functional genomics 2. Analysis of microarray data 3. Interaction between the vector and the parasite.

Bioinformatics in Africa: Part 4 - Morocco

Bioinformatics, in the UFR in Artificial Intelligence and Bioinformatics, deals with the management, the analysis, the modelling and the visualization of biological databases. Since the size of the databases is often exponential, the traditional algorithms are not very effective when seeking for a good computational solution.

To take care of this issue, many ways are opened to the researchers to improve the quality of the algorithms:

1. Usage of new information processing methods like artificial neuronal networks, genetic algorithms, etc. 2. Usage of Data mining to explore biochemical databases,
3. Usage of Machine learning on the biological examples to solve, for example, the problem of classification in Bioinformatics.

UFR offers in addition a doctoral training in Computer Science and Bioinformatics.

Doctoral module which includes: a Diplôme des Etudes Supérieures Approfondies (DESA) of two years; and a doctorate studies program with a national Ph.D. certification. Three specializations constitute the teaching trunk of the ENSAT: Computer engineering, Telecom engineering, and electronic systems engineering.

1. Machine Learning and Profile Gene Expression of Cancer
2. Predicting Protein structure
3. Hidden Markov Models (HMMs) and multiple alignments

Candidates desirous of doing a short-term training / final year dissertation project for MSc (Life Sciences/Bioinformatics/Biotechnology or any science discipline) at UIAR Biophysics and Bioinformatics department may please drop an email atanju@iiar.res.in along with their resume.

Selected candidates will be further intimated. There will be a fees charged for doing the project at UIAR. The projects will be experimental or computational or involve both.

Pondicherry University,Puducherry,on behalf of Department of Biotechnology, Government of India, will conduct the BINC examination in2015. The objective of this examination is to certify bioinformatics professionals, trained formally as well as self-trained.Registration will open from March 9,2015 to April 30,2015. Pondicherry University, Puducherry has been identified as a nodal agency by the Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India to coordinate this examination along with nine centres namely, Pune University, Pune; Anna University, Chennai; Calcutta University, Kolkata; Institute of Bioinformatics & Applied Biotechnology, Bangalore; North-Eastern Hill University, Shillong, University of Hyderabad, Hyderabad; University of Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram; Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi and Assam Agricultural University, Guwahati. In the BINC 2013 examination,17 candidates were certified. DBT has agreed to fund Research fellowships for all the BINC qualified Indian nationals to pursue Ph.D. in Indian Institutes/Universities. Note that the candidate must possess a postgraduate degree(or equivalent) & meet the criteria of the institutes/universities in order to avail research fellowship. Clinical Development Services Agency (CDSA) is an extramural unit of Translational Health Science and Technology Institute (THSTI), Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science & Technology, Government of India. CDSA has a national mandate of strengthening capacity and capability building in the area of Clinical development and Translational Research.

CDSA is pleased to announce a 4 days hands-on training program on “Essentials of Statistics and Data Analysis using R” at ICGEB, Aruna Asaf Ali Road, New Delhi on December 1 – 4, 2015. This will involve developing and enhancing skills to understand basic principles of statistics for summarizing data and use of appropriate statistical tests as well as providing an understanding of data analysis using R. Didactic lectures with practical sessions will be delivered by experienced faculties from AIIMS and Novartis. Live classroom with power point presentations, case studies, mock exercise, practical sessions on R, group work with time for discussion and Q&A sessions are added advantages of this workshop.
