16th Congress of the European Society for Evolutionary Biology (ESEB)

Abstract submissions for our upcoming symposium on the Genomics of Adaptation that will take place as part of the 16th Congress of the European Society for Evolutionary Biology (ESEB). The conference will take place from August 20th - August 25th, 2017 in Groningen, the Netherlands.

SYMPOSIUM DESCRIPTION: Genomics of Adaptation [S16] Model organisms for life-history research are mainly studied in the lab where functional genetics is assessable. In general, however, knowledge about their eco-evolutionary dynamics, such as biotic interactions, is rare. By contrast, in organisms for which the ecology and adaptation strategies in the field are well known, we typically lack the appropriate genetic tools to investigate functionality. Advances in genomics and statistics as well as investments in evolutionary model organisms are now providing access to putatively adaptive genome-wide variation within species from across the tree of life. In this symposium, we focus on integrating life-history biology, genetics and evolutionary ecology in the genomics era.

We wish to (1) highlight the role of genetic architecture of complex traits, such as adaptations to biotic interactions or life-history traits; (2) contrast this to morphological traits which are generally thought to have a less complex genetic architecture; and (3) discuss the opportunities and drawbacks of specific model systems.

INVITED SPEAKERS: Josephine Pemberton, University of Cambridge (http://bit.ly/2hJWytJ ) Peter Tiffin, University of Minnesota (http://bit.ly/2hK7HuS )

ABSTRACT SUBMISSION The deadline for abstract submission is January 10, 2017. For more information and to submit abstracts online, please visit: http://bit.ly/2fBXlvN We look forward to an exciting symposium and seeing you all in Groningen! Sincerely, Ben Blackman, UC Berkeley Maaike de Jong, University of Bristol Bart Pannebakker, Wageningen University Noah Whiteman, UC Berkeley Jelle Zandveld, Wageningen University

Assistant Professor in Rapid Marine Adaptation @ UVienna

The University of Vienna invites applications for a Tenure Track Professorship in the field of Rapid Marine Adaptation. We seek a scientist with an outstanding record in marine evolutionary genomics who investigates rapid evolutionary responses—such as evolutionary rescue—through field studies and/or experimental evolution in the laboratory. Preferred model systems should be eukaryotic marine organisms that have vital roles in oceanic or coastal ecosystems. The successful candidate will cooperate with physiologists, ecologists, biochemists, systems biologists and evolutionary biologists in Vienna to link genomic targets of selection to organismal phenotypes and local environmental conditions. This integrative work will advance mechanistic understanding and predictive modeling of rapid adaptation to climate change in marine environments and inform effective marine conservation strategies across Europe.
For more information see: https://jobs.univie.ac.at/job/Tenure-Track-Professorship-in-Rapid-Marine-Adaptation/1417563233/

Circular plots are useful to represent complicated informations. They are used in 2 specific cases: when you have long axis and numerous categories, and when you want to show relationships between elements. The circos gallery displays several examples of circular plots, what gives a nice overview of the possibilities. Circos is the most famous

Thanks to Zuguang Gu, the Circlize library makes the circos functions available in R! It implements low-level graphic functions for adding common graphics in a circular layout. This page aims to learn you how to use the library, so I strongly advise to read the graphics in the proposed order!

MGRA (Multiple Genome Rearrangements and Ancestors) is a tool for reconstruction of ancestor genomes and evolutionary history of extant genomes.

It takes as an input a set of genomes represented as sequences of genes (or synteny blocks) and produces such sequences for ancestral genomes at the internal nodes of the phylogenetic tree.

The phylogenetic tree may be also specified completely or partially, in the latter case MGRA can reconstruct conserved ancestral regions (CARs) of the ancestral genome of interest.

Since version 2 MGRA supports gene insertion and deletions in addition to genome rearrangements and allows the input genomes to have different gene content.

It also can reconstruct most plausible phylogenetic tree based on the rearrangement characters.

Address of the bookmark: http://mgra.cblab.org/

Genomicus is a genome browser that enables users to navigate in genomes in several dimensions: linearly along chromosome axes, transversaly across different species, and chronologicaly along evolutionary time.

Once a query gene has been entered, it is displayed in its genomic context in parallel to the genomic context of all its orthologous and paralogous copies in all the other sequenced metazoan genomes. Moreover, Genomicus stores and displays the predicted ancestral genome structure in all the ancestral species within the phylogenetic range of interest.
