Information For Students Interested To Pursue Doctoral Research In Biomedical Genomics, Including Statistical Genomics, At The National Institute Of Biomedical Genomics (Nibmg), Kalyan
Eligibility conditions for specific areas of research are :
Statistical Genomics : An applicant who wishes to pursue research in Statistical Genomics should hold a Master's degree (First class or equivalent) in a relevant discipline (Statistics, Mathematics, Bioinformatics, or a related discipline)
Biomedical Genomics : An applicant who wishes to pursue research in any area of biomedical genomics, other than statistical genomics, should hold a Master's degree (First class or equivalent) in a relevant discipline (Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Molecular Biology, Genetics, Zoology, Physiology, or a related discipline)
Fellowship : An applicant should have passed the NET conducted by CSIR/UGC/ICMR/DBT within the past ONE year AND should have been awarded a valid Junior Research Fellowship from CSIR, UGC, ICMR, DBT (Category-I only), DST (INSPIRE), NBHM. Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrable research training in the form of summer training or short-term courses in established research laboratories in preparation for a research career in biomedical sciences

The Laboratory of Statistics and Computational tools for Bioinformatics (BioinfoLab) is hosted at the Istituto per le Applicazioni del Calcolo "Mauro Picone" - CNR . The laboratory has been officially opened in 2012 with the support of Programma Operativo Nazionale "Ricerca e Competitività" 2007-2013 (PON "R&C"), and it incorporates several expertise and research activities started since 2007, and supported by several CNR projects. Main interest of BioinfoLab is to develop novel statistical methods and computational tools for the analysis of high dimensional data arising from "Multi-omics" applications. In particular, current activities involve the analysis of ChIP-seq and RNA-seq experiments.

We wish to recruit a highly motivated, postdoctoral scientist to carry out a BBSRC funded project in the laboratory of Dr. Denis Larkin. The project is focused on developing and applying new methods and algorithms to study genome and chromosome evolution in mammals and other animals using whole-genome sequences and existing algorithms (e.g., Damas et al. Genome Res. 2017. 27(5):875-884; Kim et al., Proc Natl Acad Sci USA. 2013. 110 (5)). The post holder will use cutting edge computational and laboratory approaches to generate chromosomal assemblies for sequenced genomes, study chromosomal structures and differences between mammalian and other vertebrate genomes in attempt to identify species- and clade-specific genome signatures.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. and a track record of success, as indicated by first-author publications in international journals. They must possess excellent organisation skills and be capable of individual initiative and of interacting as part of a team. Applicants with extensive practical experience in bioinformatics or computer science, programming, visualization, handling of large data sets, high-performance computing are encouraged to apply. The post will involve collaboration with a wide range of academic partners both within the EU and worldwide.

Experience in programming, bioinformatics and comparative genome analysis is essential. Applicants should have a minimum of a degree and preferably a higher degree in a relevant subject.

This workshop is aimed at bringing together ~40 diverse speciation researchers:

- to collaborate on populating a database of published reproductive barriers based on a standardized RIO framework (https://ecoevorxiv.org/repository/view/10083/). This will involve working through papers during the workshop to extract RI measures and other metadata and entering them into a draft database (some preparatory work before the workshop may be requested to facilitate these steps during the workshop)

- to start working towards a manuscript using this database to answer an outstanding question in speciation

- to network, learn about reproductive isolation, and have fun!
