Yes we are more bacteria than human. Have you ever wondered what it means to be human? It turns out that only a tiny percentage of what you and I are made of is actually human — and we need our non-human bits to survive. This part of us now has a name — it's called our microbiome. But we're doing dreadful things to this hidden majority and it's damaging our health as a result.
DNA Transcription (Advanced)

Transcription is the process by which the information in DNA is copied into messenger RNA (mRNA) for protein production. Originally created for DNA Interactive ( http://www.dnai.org ). TRANSCRIPT: The Central Dogma of Molecular Biology: "DNA makes RNA makes protein" Here the process begins. Transcription factors assemble at a specific promoter region along the DNA. The length of DNA following the promoter is a gene and it contains the recipe for a protein. A mediator protein complex arrives carrying the enzyme RNA polymerase. It manoeuvres the RNA polymerase into place... inserting it with the help of other factors between the strands of the DNA double helix. The assembled collection of all these factors is referred to as the transcription initiation complex... and now it is ready to be activated. The initiation complex requires contact with activator proteins, which bind to specific sequences of DNA known as enhancer regions. These regions may be thousands of base pairs distant from the start of the gene. Contact between the activator proteins and the initiation-complex releases the copying mechanism. The RNA polymerase unzips a small portion of the DNA helix exposing the bases on each strand. Only one of the strands is copied. It acts as a template for the synthesis of an RNA molecule which is assembled one sub-unit at a time by matching the DNA letter code on the template strand. The sub-units can be seen here entering the enzyme through its intake hole and they are joined together to form the long messenger RNA chain snaking out of the top.

Research fellow (PhD candidate) in computational biology – 2 positions

At the Department of Informatics two 4-year positions as research fellow are available in the field of computational biology connected to the Computational Biology Unit. The positions are linked to the project “Integrated genomics - linking transcriptional and translational regulation over developmental time” supported by the Bergen Research Foundation

The fate of a cell is ultimately the product of the regulation of its genes. Gene regulation is a coordinated process acting at multiple levels of which transcription and translation are the most prominent. The Valen group is dedicated to the fundamental question of how transcription and translation is integrated to obtain the desired protein abundance. The recent development of high-throughput next generation sequencing techniques to monitor both active translation and transcription has made it possible to study this connection at the genome scale.

This project aims to elucidate the links between regulation of translation and transcription. The applicant will analyze next generation sequencing data and model gene regulation on a genome-wide level to identify the features that affect the translational output of transcripts. The work will be done in close collaboration with experimental scientists who will test the predictions of the computational models.

Additional information on the position can be obtained by contacting Eivind Valen (eivind.valen@ii.uib.no).

The research fellow must take part in the University’s approved PhD program leading to the degree within a time limit of 3 years. Application for admission to the PhD program, including a project plan outline for the training module, will be worked out in collaboration with the research group in question.

In total, the fellowship period is 4 years, 25 % of this will be allocated to teaching and/or administrative duties. The fellowship period may be reduced if the successful applicant has held previous employment as a research fellow or similar.
