Worldwide rapid dissemination of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is staggering, and the number of deaths associated with AMR is estimated to exceed that of deaths due to cancers in the near future unless the global response is mounted. There is no doubt that antimicrobial use itself is a direct cause of antimicrobial resistance, but it is still challenging to diagnose bacterial infections and use antimicrobials appropriately in current clinical settings. Our goal is to contribute to better diagnostics and treatment guidelines by revealing the interrelationships among pathogens, host immunity, and antimicrobial agents.

Research Program aims to elucidate how gut microbial species relate to genotypic differences between human individuals, to identify bacterial and archaeal species that share an evolutionary history with humans, and to determine the molecular basis of long-term host-microbial relationships. We approach these aims through a combination of population-level observations and laboratory-based molecular-level investigations. We link inter-microbial and microbial-host interactions at the molecular scale to patterns at population and evolutionary scales.

The core expertise of the lab is comparative genomics. We combine evolutionary bioinformatics and molecular biology to understand the mechanism, function and evolution of genes.
We study the processes of gene expression and protein synthesis, and we are particularly interested in the phenomenon of translational recoding (programmed exceptions to the genetic code). For more information, see Research.

We study the evolutionary genomics of marine invertebrates to understand their origins and diversity. Our lab combines high-throughput sequencing and single-cell transcriptomics to explore a wide range of non-model systems. We are particularly interested in how evolutionary novelty arises, with a focus on animal development and photosymbiosis.
