This research group brings the tools of systems biology to bear on the grand challenges of sustainability. The lab members and I are passionate about trying to understand the cellular highways of energy and carbon transformations known as central carbon metabolism in quantitative terms. They employ a combination of computational and experimental synthetic biology tools.
Ron Milo Lab research efforts are the culmination of three directions:
(1) Understanding the structure and logic of central carbon and energy metabolism in quantitative terms
(2) Synthetic metabolic pathways for carbon fixation
(3) Novel tools facilitating accurate, accessible and collaborative quantitative cell biology

The Computational Biology research group was established in October 2012 at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science (IMADA) at the University of Southern Denmark (SDU). It emerged from the Computational Systems Biology group, founded in March 2010 at the Max Planck Institute for Informatics (MPII) and the Cluster of Excellence for Multimodel Computing and Interaction (MMCI) at Saarland University, Saarbrücken, Germany.

The group is headed by Prof. Dr. Jan Baumbach and currently hosts nine PhD students and one postdoctoral fellow at both, IMADA/SDU and MMCI/MPII.

The IBL laboratory focuses on the multi-disciplinary analyses of the global responses of model microorganisms, cyanobacteria (mainly Synechocystis PCC6803) and yeasts (mainly Saccharomyces cerevisae) to environmental stresses triggered by oxidative agents, heavy metals, or drastic changes in nutrients availability. The genome-wide responses studied with the "omics" techniques (transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics and genetics) generate a wealth of experimental data, which are processed, archived, integrated and represented as working models through bioinformatics and mathematics.

The Human Genome Project led to the development of a wide array of technologies to screen the genome and its products (genes, proteins, metabolites) and molecules that interact with these products (chemicals, RNAi). The existence of these tools resulted in the creation of facilities that use robotics and informatics to generate high-throughput screens of DNA, RNA, protein, tissue, chemicals and other substances.

The genomics platform uses cancer genome sequencing and other high-throughput techniques to identify genes critical to the development of cancer and anomalies in the genomic profile of the tumours.
